Rapid cellulose nanomaterial characterisation by rheology

چکیده

Abstract Cellulose nanomaterial (CNM) aspect ratio strongly influences sheet formation and resulting mechanical, optical, barrier properties. However, there is a lack of fast reliable methods for CNM determination, limiting the production nanocellulose at industrial-scale. Current laboratory approaches comprise microscopic (e.g. atomic force microscopy (AFM) transmission electron (TEM)), sedimentation methods, which are time-consuming limited to specific fibre sizes. Here, we describe new rheological method determine ratios whole size range cellulose fibres using rheology. nanocrystals (CNCs), nanofibres (CNFs), wood in form Bleached Eucalyptus Kraft (BEK) were investigated. The these three scales determined by measuring viscosity profiles their suspensions different concentrations from high low shear rates (2000–0.001 s −1 ), evaluating whether exhibited entangled or disentangled behaviour. results agreed well with those produced AFM methods. Furthermore, measurements generated 5 hours each feedstock, while required least 2 days produce same results. Ultimately, demonstrate that rheology rapid accurate sizes, critical step towards facilitating full-scale application.

Characterisation of nanomaterial hydrophobicity using engineered surfaces

Characterisation of engineered nanomaterials (NMs) is of outmost importance for the assessment of the potential risks arising from their extensive use. NMs display indeed a large variety of physico-chemical properties that drastically affect their interaction with biological systems. Among them, hydrophobicity is an important property that is nevertheless only slightly covered by the current ph...

Extensional rheology of cellulose-ionic liquid solutions

Various cellulose-ionic liquid solutions were measured with a rotational plate-andplate rheometer and a Capillary Break-up Extensional Rheometer (CaBER). Comparison of the shear and extensional rheological properties showed good agreement in some cases. The CaBER, however, seems to be more sensitive to small variations in solute composition. INTRODUCTION Since almost a decade now, nonderivatizi...

Synthesis, Characterisation and Flocculation Properties of Carboxymethyl Cellulose-g Acrylamide

Graft copolymers of acrylamide on carboxymethyl cellulose (d.s 0.4-0.5) were prepared by the use of ceric ion, ceric ion/reductant molecule initiator systems in aqueous medium. The graft copolymers were characterized by IR spectroscopy. The extent of graft copolymerisation was measured in terms of grafted chains as a function of both ceric ion and ceric ion/reductant molecule concentrations. It...

Rheology of Microfibrillated Cellulose Suspensions in Pressure-driven Flow

Rheology of Microfibrillated Cellulose (MFC) suspensions is useful for designing equipment to transport, mix, or process them. Pressure-driven flow behavior is particularly important for MFC suspensions if they are to be pumped, extruded or coated. Herein, we report use of slot and pipe geometries for determination of MFC suspension rheology and compare the results to boundary-driven flows. MFC...

When Microrheology, Bulk Rheology, and Microfluidics Meet: Broadband Rheology of Hydroxyethyl Cellulose Water Solutions

In this work, we present new insights related to a debate on the morphological structure of hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) molecules when dissolved in water, i.e., whether HEC adopts a linear-flexible or a rod-like fibrillar configuration. We have employed “seven” rheological techniques to explore the viscoelastic properties of HEC solutions at different time and length scales. This work demonstr...
